Questions for wedding photographers

Coming up with questions to interview wedding photographers can be challenging. It might be the first time you have talked to a professional photographer and trusting someone for your big day is a really big ask. I like my first conversations with my couples to be happy and, well, conversational! So just to get our feet wet, I googled the most important questions to ask your wedding photographer and Brides.com had a pretty extensive list! So here it is, the 30 most common wedding questions and our answers!

Will you be the one shooting my wedding? If not, can I meet the photographer who will be on-site?

I will be the photographer shooting the wedding. My team is made up of the same professionals week after week and in the event something horrible occurs to me before or on your wedding day, they will just seamlessly take over!

How many other weddings will you photograph that weekend?

I typically only shoot one event per weekend. However, in this crazy time of scheduling and rescheduling, I am doing everything I can to take care of all my clients. Once you are a client you are like family and we will move heaven and earth for you.

Will you have any assistants with you on our wedding day?
Normally, I bring one – two photographers with me depending on the needs of the day. If I am shooting without my team, I will bring an assistant to help me stay organized.
How long have you been shooting weddings? How many weddings have you photographed?

I have been shooting weddings since 2005 and have been dedicated to shooting weddings as our primary business since 2014. I have photographed over 60 happy couples (and most of them are still married!)

How would you describe your working style? Do you prefer to blend into the background to capture candid moments, or do you like to be more visible and take charge to choreograph images?

Both! Sometimes, I need to take charge to make sure we make the most of our time! So, at those moments I must be comfortable directing and instructing large groups of people. Other times, I watch what is occurring and document the sweet moments as they naturally unfold. Sometimes, I do a little bit of directing so that you not only look beautiful but look like YOU! I have a lot of luck directing families and people rather than pure traditional posing. Of course, we start out learning about posture and what makes the body look most flattering on camera but we quickly move into little vignettes that I like to stage like a director. I will do this throughout the day to keep people from getting that frozen smile look or feeling awkward. For example, for my couples, I like to ask you to tell each other little stories to keep you focused on each other and to help you put me out of your mind. Some of them might seem strange but work every time! You probably have noticed the subtle differences from “real” interactions versus fake laughter and staged poses. And I hate being told to fake laugh. Instead, I will have bridesmaids all tell something genuine to you which will get real emotions out pretty quickly! Laughter, cuddles, whatever is natural for you! Every couple has a unique way of holding hands, leaning into each other, and smiling and that is what will stand the test of time.

What is included in your standard package? What add-ons do the more expensive packages include?

Our Makeup to Midnight package includes an heirloom wedding album, an exceptional engagement session (many couples choose mountain top engagements!), and a full day of photography coverage as well as our full team of 3 photographers! Contact us for a full list of packages and options. We are always happy to customize something that works best for your situation!

Can I customize a package to fit my needs?

PLEASE ask me to customize it. In the last two weeks, I have created custom packages for micro weddings as well as weddings without a second photographer. I have also created packages for a full weekend of coverage. Each couple is different and so a one size fits all doesn’t always work.

Do you offer retouching, color adjustment, or other corrective services? Are those included or an additional charge?

All my images are hand retouched. Often, photographers just process for color correction and style and do not correct any cosmetic or environmental distractions. You want a photographer that does both of those things.

Can we order prints or albums directly from you?

YES! I love to help create heirloom pieces to help make the most of your investment. But, you don’t have to. My clients receive 650-850 high-resolution images and they can share them and print them at home at all.

What type of album do you offer? Do you provide assistance selecting images and designing the album?

I love my albums and I think everyone should have one. While I know that budgets don’t always allow for an album, I will make one for you anytime in the future.

Truthfully, hiring a wedding photographer is an investment and I feel like not having an album is like designing a gorgeous kitchen and not putting appliances in!

I will help you every step of the way!

• The first step is to choose about 60-80 images. (Don’t worry, I will give you a framework) Next, I create a draft to review.

How long after the wedding will we receive the images? How will they be delivered?

I love to do extended previews and provide my couples with 80-100 images in the first few days after the wedding when they are most excited to get to share them! It is true, I don’t deliver your final gallery in 2 weeks like other photographers may BUT that is because I hand retouch every image.  Sometimes, photographers only make color and exposure adjustments to your images – which is ok – too. Not judging anyone here!

Do you include engagement photos in your packages? What about pre-wedding events like rehearsal dinners?

We’re big fans of engagement sessions for a few reasons. Not only do they allow you to get comfortable in front of the camera, but they also allow you to showcase your personalities in a more casual setting that is significant to the two of you. Additional events are available for an additional fee.

How many hours are included in each package? How much do extra hours cost?

My packages include between 7-12 hours of coverage. Additional hours of coverage can be added to each package as needed for $350 per hour. We are also delighted to offer mini packages for micro weddings, elopements and social distancing events!

When will we receive the contract?

With your verbal commitment, I will hold your date while preparing your contract. Usually, it takes between 2-3 days to get everything together.

How much of a deposit do you require? When is it due?

This is a little different this year! Many couples are nervous about 2021 weddings in light of the current COVID pandemic. So, to put everyone’s minds at ease, we are reducing our retain to $650. It is nonrefundable and covers and engagement session as well as administrative fees.

Do you have liability insurance? Does it cover your assistants, as well?

YES! I carry 2 million liability policy which most venues require.

Do you carry backup equipment?

YES! I carry backup everything!!
